It has been claimed that Queen Elizabeth I had full control over what portraits were released of her, this could be because many of the Virgin Queens portraits hold symbolisms as to how she wishes her people to see her. For example within this portrait there are a number of symbolic references for her to establish hr authority. Firstly her dress is embroided with white english flowers, emphasising her heritage and her country. In addition to this the Queen is wearing an elaborate headdress covered in jewels and pearls, assumed to represent her crown and emphasise her status as ruler. One of the strongest references within the portrait is that her cloak is decorated with eyes and ears, a message to all that she sees and hears everything.
The serpent on the arm of the Queens robes is often used to represent wisdom, portraying both the Queens excellent education and knowledge but also her understanding of what it takes to be a good ruler. Finally the main feature of the painting is a rainbow, this is said to be included in the painting as rainbows are recognised as a symbol of peace and happiness. The Queen is holding the rainbow in her right hand, suggesting to her people that she holds the key to a brighter future, only her wisdom can bring them happiness.
